CARBON MONOXIDE TESTING

Often known as the ‘Silent Killer”, carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely.

In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide if they are faulty and/or haven’t been serviced and can prove fatal!

Call ProRec Plumbing Solutions today to get your home tested!

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odourless, colourless gas. In the past decade nine Victorians have died from carbon monoxide poisoning, including brothers Chase and Tyler Robinson who died in their Mooroopna home in May 2010.

The Office of the Technical Regulator and the ProRec Plumbing team urge EVERYONE with indoor gas appliances and landlords who rent out homes withindoor gas appliances to have them serviced every 2 years to avoid this problem repeating.

A very small amount of carbon monoxide is always produced by the combustion of gas, which is safe AND if the appliance is used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and is not faulty. If a gas appliance or installation is faulty then there is a risk that very high or deadly levels of carbon monoxide may occur. There are a number of easy ways to protect yourself and your family from carbon monoxide poisoning:

  1. Have gas appliances serviced at least every 2 years by ProRec Plumbing Solutions or another licensed gas fitter. Ask us, your licensed gas fitter, to also check the appliance installation at the same time.
  2. Only use the gas type that is designated for use with the appliance. For example, it is dangerous to use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with a natural gas appliance or vice versa.
  3. Only use the appliance for its intended purpose. For example, do not use a gas cooker to heat your home.
  4. Ensure the gas appliance has adequate ventilation to operate properly and prevent build up of any harmful products of combustion, including carbon monoxide. In most cases, the by-products produced by gas appliances are dispersed outside your home via a flue.
  5. Many households are designed to prevent draughts – if you have a natural draught flued gas heater, you may be at risk of drawing by-products of combustion (ie carbon monoxide) back into your home if you have a powerful exhaust fan operating anywhere in your home. This can also happen if the flue is partially or fully blocked
  6. Beware of carbon monoxide when using gas appliances in confined rooms without adequate ventilation eg toilets/bedrooms or caravans where the doors and windows are tightly sealed. This can be extremely dangerous.
  7. Always follow safe practices when operating unflued gas appliances, eg portable space heaters, portable gas refrigerators and stoves.
  8. Watch out for signs of incomplete combustion and possible carbon monoxide formation. Signs include:
    • an acrid smell and irritation to the eyes
    • soot or yellow/brown staining around or on the appliance
    • pilot lights that frequently blow out.
    • change in the gas flames colour - flame colour does not necessarily indicate carbon monoxide production, however if a blue flame becomes yellow, carbon monoxide production is increased.
    • Don’t risk your family’s safety, Call ProRec Plumbing Solutions today to get your home tested for Carbon Monoxide

SPLIT SYSTEM AIR CONDITIONING – SINGLE HEAD SPLIT SYSTEMS

How does reverse cycle air conditioning work? Most electric heaters create heat directly, using elements which heat up when an electric current passes through them. These ‘direct element’ heaters include portable heaters, panel convectors and off-peak storage heaters. They have a maximum efficiency of 100%, when all the electricity is converted to heat and delivered to the room. Reverse cycle air conditioning extracts heat from the outside air, even on mid-winter nights, and transfers it inside. A refrigerant is passed through an external coil, absorbing heat from the outside air. This refrigerant is then pumped through a compressor into a fan coil unit (or ‘condenser’) inside the home, releasing its heat into the room. Up to three or more units of heat can be transferred for every unit of electricity used to run reverse cycle air conditioning. Therefore, running costs can be as low as one-third of those for direct element heaters. By reversing the flow of this refrigerant, reverse cycle air conditioners also provide efficient refrigerative cooling in summer. So sick of those stuffy warm nights or what about even freezing cold? Call ProRec Plumbing today and control your temperature at the touch of a button!

What is its advantage?

  • One of the most economical forms of heating
  • Able to provide both heating and cooling
  • Remain cool to touch at all times
  • Have no exposed elements or flames
  • Lifetime of up to 20 years
  • Filter and dehumidify air

Split systems are permanently-mounted systems with the compressor unit located externally and a separate condenser inside the home. These are joined together by piping, which carries the refrigerant. The remote location of the compressor makes these units significantly quieter than window/wall models. The internal unit of a split system is most commonly installed on a wall. However, units which can be located at floor level (which gives optimum heating performance), on the ceiling surface, or in the ceiling as a cassette are also available. Wall units must generally be installed on an external wall to provide adequate draining of condensate. Floor-mounted units have slightly decreased cooling effectiveness. This should not usually be a concern, as heating is generally

BACK-FLOW PREVENTION DEVICE TESTING & MAINTENANCE

Introduction to Backflow Prevention

The term backflow means an unwanted flow of treated or non-potable water substance from any domestic, industrial or institutional piping system into the pure, potable water distribution system. Backflow may be caused by numerous specific conditions; but, basically the reverse pressure gradient may be due to a loss of pressure in the supply main called backsyphonage, or by the flow from a pressurised system through an unprotected cross connection, which is called backpressure. Thus the term backflow covers both a backsyphonage condition and a back pressure condition.

DEGREE OF HAZARD

The type of backflow device used to prevent backflow from occurring at the point of a cross-connection depends on the type of substance which may flow into the potable water supply. A pollutant is any substance considered a health hazard if it causes illness or death if ingested. High Hazard - Any condition, device or practice which in connection with the potable water supply system has the potential to cause death. Medium Hazard - Any condition, device or practice which in connection with the potable water supply system has the potential to endanger health. Low Hazard - Any condition, device or practice which in connection with the potable water supply system would constitute a nuisance but not endanger health or cause injury. ProRec Plumbing Solutions has the most recent in backflow testing equipment and service a number of devices around Melbourne. Our testing equipment is calibrated every 12 months and kept in great condition, ensuring the most accurate of reporting.
